Here’s a little example of a style of ‘Audio Response’ typeform that I recently built out for a corporate cafeteria.
They wanted a really simple form that users could access internally and submit comments about the lunch in the cafeteria. They didn’t want to use the video feature to allow staff to be relatively anonymous in their entries.
They opted for the Audio option to be able to not only get the users to leave their verbal comments but also for the transcription that is available.
Here’s the basics of how their form is set up:
A welcome screen, a multiple choice to allow them to select one of three categories and the audio response question.
Welcome screen:
The multiple choice is set up for three simple categories, as you can see. This allows for notifications to the various team leads in the cafeteria, using conditional logic. I won’t go into that for this example though.
And for the audio response, they had a very simple question created.
👀 When you choose to add the Video and Audio question, the default value is set to have Video toggled on. All you need to do is toggle the Audio on and then the Video off. And you are set. Your setting should look like this on the question:
You can give the user the option to answer by text but the cafeteria decided they just wanted the text.
When the user is in the form, they will see the following screen and simply need to push the red button to start the recording process. They will be given a 3 second countdown and the recording will start:
If they don’t have a working mic set up on their machine they will see the following message.
The two-minute time limit for the audio answer is typically sufficient for this type of application/scenario.
The Results - Responses tab is where you will be able to see the link to the audio response and the transcription of the audio. The transcription is pretty good but there are some cases where the phrases are incorrect.
In the snapshot below, you will see one response with ‘wheat-ed’ instead of the ‘wee tad’ phrasing that I used in the example:
It’s quite easy download the results file and capture the transcripts into a text file or to use your preferred AI tool to examine the comments and make recommendations.
There are a number of possible use-cases for using audio-only responses - from capturing comments, as in this example, to capturing sounds bites/ideas that you have at various times during the day.
Two things to note:
- This feature is available on the Growth and Talent plans from Typeform - the number of minutes of audio/video available in your plan will be the upper limit of what you can have recorded.
- You can’t connect this question type to the API or Integrations - at least not at this time .

That’s it for today.
