🤔 [WDYT?] Let's choose our community ranks

Hope everyone is well today.

As some of you may have noticed, the community has something called ranks, these are titles based on someone’s all time activity. They basically measure evolution and activity in the community and they give a good idea of how new or how pro a member is.

The community has some default ranks names, so Im intending to change them and make them more ‘Typeform’.

Currently there are 8 ranks, see below.

Ignore the duplicate rank, but I guess you all get the point. Your user title will evolve as you get more active in the community - note this does not apply to Typeform staff. I’m thinking to start with 5 ranks and then add more in the future depending of how quick you guys rank up :rocket: !

The starting point is to define a pattern or sequence - basically there needs to be a link between those ranks and a natural evolution, such as (1) crawling (2) walking (3) running (4) kite-surfing (5) flying. I’d never choose this sequence by the way, just want to provide an example.

We need to think about something linked to building typeforms… good challenge, huh?

Would love to know what you think.

Hey! This is interesting for sure. Totally agree that 8 is too much. I'm a member of another forum and we have 5 levels which works great.

Here are some ideas:

  1. Bronze
  2. Silver
  3. Gold
  4. Platinum
  5. Diamond
  1. Just got here
  2. Feeling friendly
  3. Sharing wisdom
  4. Form fanatic
  5. Honorary Typeformer
  1. Trainee builder
  2. Apprentice builder
  3. General builder
  4. Master builder
  5. Oracle

Some of these could use some work but the ideas are there.

Uuuuuh. Those are cool, Max. Are you a professional writer by any chance? :yum:

Can you tell us which forum is that?

I love all @maxgayler 's suggestions, particularly the second group. That kidz got mad writing skillz.

To throw another idea in the mix, if we're thinking of Typeform in terms of a tool for enabling conversations/interactions then maybe the levels could reflect stages of interactions/conversations. Something like:

  1. Observer

  2. Dabbler

  3. Thought leader

  4. Tastemaker

  5. Influencer

These are all lifted from Klout's social styles definitions.

Hi @james and @maxgayler. The idea of having 5 categories is great and offer a simple and clear idea of the kind of users.

Just wanted to share my vision about the names. I find more appealing these ones:

  • Broadcasters
  • Feeder
  • Activist (also very related with Gen Z sentiments around actuality)
  • Socializer
  • Explorer (people need adventure in digital also)

Or it would be just great to create the categories ad hoc for this community, related with Typeform values & taste.

Thanks!

I like these Rocio, because they represent engagement levels. I’m not too sure about Feeder, maybe there’s a better word for it . What kind of idea are you trying to convey with that word?

@Rocío these are really interesting options, thanks for sharing. I love these terms and they somehow feel "aspirational" in that all community members would love to associate themselves with one of these terms.

I'm now wondering if we used these type of terms if it would be obvious what "rank" someone was.
@maxgayler 's are more structured around an obvious levelling system. How closely should we stick to a pure ranking system versus something more abstract but where all the names are aspirational in some way?

Personally I would prefer to be referred to as an explorer rather than a trainee/bronze if I was on the bottom rung of the ladder. But then would I necessarily know if a socializer was a higher rank than me? It's more obvious to see the scale in Max's system. But does that matter?

@Gabriel interested to know what you've seen work well in other communities regarding naming conventions for ranks. How tenuous can a link be between the evolution of the ranks?

@Gabriel for me feeder is someone that nurtures the community, but not as complete as broadcaster. Someone to shares from other sources more than generating her/his own narrative.

Sounds like a facilitator to me!

These were my first thought too @james . And thanks for the kind words <3

Really like the creativity @Rocío! I think they're clever and on brand. The only thing I've experienced in the past with ranking is the most important thing is making it clear which ranks are higher and lower. Otherwise it kind of kills the gamification of it all. So +1 to what James said

If there's a way we can make it more obvious which is higher/lower then I think it's definitely a contender :D

Aha thanks a bunch Gabriel. I have dabbled before. I use efestivals.com all the time. Just checked their system and they have these depending on how many times you have posted a comment or topic:

Newbie    0
Member    10
Advanced Member    50
Addicted    100
Festival Freak    250
Staying out for the summer    2500
Lives in a field    5000

7 levels in the end but simply come from being around so long and having to give their most active members something to get excited about.

hey @maxgayler I see those make sense, but I find the first three a bit impersonal, they could relate to any community as opposed to a festival fan. Don’t you think?

Userlevel 3

Totally agree @Gabriel. I feel like some of what we've suggested works great. Seems like efestivals.com figured out branding later on once people started posting loads. We can preempt this and get the branded names out from the start.

Yeah, we'll keep this thread running for a few weeks, would be good to get the perspective of other typformers and users .. We'll get there.

You all have a fab weekend!

I absolutely LOVE this!

I find James’ ones to be very sophisticated 🙂 But the ones proposed by @maxgayler  are good too and feel a bit more typeformy…
