Question

Logic Editor Not Recognizing Custom Variables or Allowing Input in Branching

Hi everyone! šŸ‘‹

I’m building a quiz in Typeform that uses multipleĀ custom variablesĀ (likeĀ @calm,Ā @contact,Ā @care, etc.) to assign points to different categories. All of my variables are set up correctly in theĀ Variables tabĀ as numbers with a starting value of 0.

However, when I go intoĀ Workflow → BranchingĀ to create my ā€œGo toā€ logic, Typeform isn’t recognizing those variables properly.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • In Safari, I can type variable names manually, but they stay as plain text (they don’t turn into variable ā€œchipsā€).

  • In Chrome, I can’t type anything at all into the comparison field — it’s completely uneditable.

  • I’ve tried saving, refreshing, and reopening the form, and all variables appear in the Variables panel as expected, but they still don’t show up as selectable options in Branching.

I’ve cleared cache, tried both browsers, and even duplicated the form — still no luck.

Question:
Has anyone else experienced this issue with custom variable recognition in Branching?
Is there a known fix or a recommended browser/workflow to get the variable dropdowns or ā€œchipsā€ to appear again?

Thank you so much in advance — I’m so close to launching this quiz and just need this last piece working!

@FureverĀ - i just ran a test at 10:15 pm eastern time and created a form with new custom variables, placed them on screen with @recall and they were available in the logic rule dropdowns.Ā

not sure what is happening for you

suggest opening a ticket with Typeform Support at this link to see if they can resolve it for you.Ā

Hey @Furever,

Ā

I created a custom variable named calm and in the Branching set up where it shows Then go to, click the drop down and select a calculation. You should then be able to see the custom variables you’ve created in the next dropdown.

Ā

But if that doesn’t work, then I would recommend to reach out to the support team as Des suggested above.
