Prefill fields

Is it possible to prepopulate fields? I looked into hidden fields but it seems to me you can only use them in the descriptions.

Hi @Lomollola. Hope you are fine. :hugging:

If you are trying to populate the hidden fields automatically, I'm afraid that wouldn't be possible. However, if you have the data from your respondents, you can use a third party tool (such as Mailchimp) and pre-populate it. Here is the help center article that explains it a bit.

Regarding switching to the classic builder, it is not possible to do it. The New Builder is the updated version and this will be the version available for all the users from now on.

By the way, thanks @Paulo for sharing the articles. I think they are super useful =)

Have a good one!

Hello @Lomollola !

If you’re using the Classic builder, maybe this article can help you.

In case you’re using the New builder, this one can help:slight_smile:

Thank you. Unfortunately both articles don't explain how to pre-populate a form using hidden fields.
How do I switch to the classic builder?

I’m not sure I understood this correctly, but it seemed like the original question was about pre-filling the answers based on the hidden fields? The use case is in the scenario that you are using Typeform to send a questionnaire to someone who has filled it out previously but wants to update their answers. It would be ideal if their previous answers were already pre-populated in the answer field.

Is there a way to do this?

im optimistic!

I would imagine its possible based on some of the processes highlighted in this article: https://help.typeform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360029664091-Launch-your-typeform-from-an-email

The user clicks the answer in the email and then is whisked to a form that has a question pre-populated. I want to do the same by dynamically building the URL in my application.

heres an example of it more or less what i would love to see!

For instance clicking this link gets you one pre-filled answer  in a test form

But using this link you get a different answer pre-filled

I want to be able to do this dynamically and for any type of field, not just multiple choice

is this already possible with hidden fields?

Hidden fields documentation & help articles describe their use in the Questions/Descriptions like the OP mentioned but not in the actual answers. this would be a really great help.

thank you!

Hi @jcp Thanks for stopping by! Apologies for my delay. It isn’t possible to pre-fill answers, but you can pass the data into the form through hidden fields. Would that work for you? The main difference to this is that the respondent wouldn’t see this appear as an answer in their form but it would appear in the results.

No, unfortunately that doesn’t work as I need people to be able to edit the content that they had previously entered.

Here is the equivalent functionality in HeyFlow: https://www.heyflow.help/en/articles/5508747-set-variables-from-url

& the equivalent functionality in JotForm: https://www.jotform.com/help/71-Prepopulating-Fields-to-Your-JotForm-via-URL-Parameters/

both seem to work more or less the same way. In Typeform I see through the email-embed functionality that you all have something really similar that uses question reference block ids

https://co6gw4973cf.typeform.com/to/d6FnzUJn?typeform-medium=embed-email#answers-3c06436d-0366-444f-ba4e-4b7d5b789973=134a4576-870e-4e51-bf70-99d86142fa0c

I can see from the URL that the block reference used corresponds to the prefilled quesiton: 3c06436d-0366-444f-ba4e-4b7d5b789973=134a4576-870e-4e51-bf70-99d86142fa0c

is there a way to use block references in the URL at all? looks like its really close and maybe not an advertised feature, but havent quite been able to figure anything out. If not, that’s okay just wanted to ask someone @ typeform since you all may have some insider work arounds!

Thanks & sorry for all the links, but I appreciate your time!

Thanks for sharing, @jcp ! I’m afraid this isn’t a feature we currently offer. The link you’ve sent appears to be a hack of our email embed, which does offer this feature, though this isn’t something we currently offer outside of the email embed.

If you have any other questions or suggestions, please let me know!

Hello @jcp, did you find a solution to this?

I need the same functionality - any workarounds or product updates in typeform to allow this?

Hello,

Is there a way to prefill select fields based on a user answering a multiple choice question?

-----------------------------

In my form, I have a required multiple choice question to gather the country info. I did this, because I need their answers in this format for future integration.

  • Canada
  • United States of America

After they make their selection, I would like their answer to prefill in

  • the ‘Country’ text field in the address block
  • Preselect the phone country code in the contact info block

Hi @SarahTS I added your post here where we have information on pre-filling fields. It’s not possible in our forms, but I’m happy to share the feedback with the product team.
