Question

Scan Barcode to auto enter Data into a field

I would like our customer (who receives a barcode with a unique serial number) to be able to scan that barcode via their phone camera and that it open my Typeform form and the Serial # be auto-populated in a field without them having to type it manually. Is this possible?

Hi @lifeship Welcome to the community! Happy to have you here. :grinning: We don’t currently have this feature, but this sounds pretty cool! Out of curiosity, is the serial number assigned to a product they’re buying from you?

any news about this feature? reading a barcode and QR code is very useful.

Hi @fxdavis We don’t have this in the roadmap, but if anything changes, we’ll post about it here. 😀

I have a similar request, but instead of scanning the QR code to launch the form, I want users to be able to respond to a question by scanning a QR code via their camera app.  e.g. membership/loyalty cards often have a QR code on the back that encodes the membership number.  By scanning this, we can speed up the entry, and avoid data entry/keystroke errors.

Hi @paesano99 Thanks for sharing this suggestion! We don’t have a feature like this in the works, but happy to share the feedback with the product team.

Looks like people have been requesting this for 2 years now, is it on the roadmap yet? I really need this functionality.

Hi @illuminoughtu We don’t have plans to add this to the roadmap since there are a few other features (like partial completion) that are requested more often, but if that changes, we’ll post about it here!

You may want to consider using Jotform for this use case. I migrated from Typeform to Jotform last year, and one of the advantages is that Jotform includes widgets to scan barcodes and QR codes directly within the form.

I used Typeform for several years because of its simplicity and great user experience. However, when projects required barcode or QR scanning, I ultimately had to move to another platform.

It’s a bit surprising to see that this feature has been requested in the community for over four years and still isn’t on the roadmap. Barcode and QR scanning are very common needs for events, inventory, registration, and field operations.

Hopefully the Typeform team will reconsider this in the future, as it could unlock many practical use cases for the platform.

Hey @Alberto Olivas thanks so much for resurfacing this thread ⬆

I see there have been a few different use cases discussed since the initial question, so just to clarify, it is possible to generate a QR code for any typeform via the Share page. While we don’t have the option to generate with a URL parameter natively, this could be done via a free QR code generator, and the URL parameters will be picked up by the form.

At the moment it’s not possible to add a QR/Barcode reader within the form like you said, but we’d be interested to hear more from folks that need this feature, so definitely encourage members to share their use cases here so we can better understand the need. I’ve passed your comments onto our Product team, so they’re keeping an eye on the conversation 😊
