Space Bar Breaks Text Typing in VideoAsk

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with text answers in VideoAsk

When respondents click into the text answer field in the VideoAsk and start typing, pressing the spacebar does not always insert a space as expected.

Instead, the space bar appears to control the video (play/pause or record), as if focus has shifted back to the video area rather than staying in the text field.

This issue is new and wasn't happening before, the space bar used to work correctly for typing spaces in this exact same VideoAsk

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open any VideoAsk that includes an open-ended text answer field.
  2. Click the button or option that advances to the open-ended text question.
  3. Start typing your answer in the text field. When you press the space bar while typing, instead of inserting a space between words, the video stops or plays (as if the space bar is controlling the video), so normal typing with spaces is not possible.

Hi @koby @maxmax @Munronutrition I’ve just been notified that this has been fixed, would you be able to confirm it’s working as expected now?

Hey @koby thanks for flagging 😊

I wonder if this might be a bug, would you mind reporting it to the VideoAsk support team for investigation? (support@videoask.com)

I already submitted it. Do you happen to have a way to reproduce the issue? I want to make sure it’s not something I’m doing incorrectly.

I would expect this to be a significant problem, so I’m a bit surprised I’m the only one noticing it.

@Grace, could you please let me know if there have been any additional reports on this? Also, could you help escalate this to the support team in any way?

Hey @koby just checked with the support team, they’ve escalated this to the developers for review so hopefully you get an update soon. At the moment we haven’t had any other reports which is interesting, hopefully the team can identify the issue quickly.

Good morning,

My clients are having the same issue as above.

It seems to be specific to Apple iphone devices so far. Some of my clients are able to complete the video form, others say as soon as they hit the space bar the video is being replayed over and over and they can only type one word.

I have tested it through Chrome on my Android phone and the form is working fine.

I have suggested to my iphone users to type their responses in their notes app then try pasting them into the box until this is resolved.

Don’t worry, it’s not just you, I have dozens of clients now experiencing the same issue.

Same issue Happening with me. It’s a disaster since our customers access the Videoasks within a paid membership and we have >100 users with this issue, resulting in me getting a load of confused emails and unhappy customers.

please escalate this immediately.

I have been dissatisfied with the VideoAsk embed generally and this makes me think whether I can count on VA in the future…

Good morning,
I’m just wondering if there’s any update on this? I haven’t received any more complaints over the weekends from my clients but that may be becuase I put up a pinned post to let them know I was aware of the issue and it was being investigated.

I have just tested it and it still does not work. This is a crucial bug that makes VideoAsk unusable and it should be treated with severity. Please flag this one more time @Grace

It still doesn’t work. I’ve identified the issue, and it’s a simple fix, so I’m not sure why it’s taking so long.

The script webauthn-listeners.js appears to be running a setInterval every 100ms that calls ensureFocus(). This method aggressively polls the document focus by:

- Checking document.hasFocus().

- If false (or if focus is inconsistent), it iterates through all input:not([autocomplete*="webauthn"]) elements and calls .focus() on them.

This frequent focus-shifting is causing the browser to lose the "Input Method Editor" context for the spacebar. As a result, the event bubbles up to the global video keyboard listeners (where Space triggers Play/Pause) rather than remaining within the local text input context.
