utm source

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

Sorry, this is not explained in great detail on the typeform site, and I have never done anything like this before. Please bear with me if this blindingly bleedin’ obvious to the more experienced amongst you.

So… I now have a survey...

  • We will embed it on our 1-pager site, and also on a dedicated page on our partner’s site.
  • We will share the link by our email, by Mailchimp list, by our partner’s email list.
  • We will also share the link via a Facebook page, a Twitter page and a LinkedIn page.

So, by my reckoning that’s 8 separate utm packets of code. Correct?

(1)   I assume I need to be tracking under utm_source.

(2)   Do I create 8 versions of the same survey and then for each of them go to cog / settings / utm tracking, switch them all off except for utm source and then individually generate the appropriate code packet for each source, ie. &utm_source=facebook

Sorry if that’s clumsy english (even clumsier tech speak!), but I’m not a techie, I’m a virtual assistant who knows a lot of MS Word and a little illustrator and this shouldn’t be so unfathomable, and should definitely be better explained on the website.

My warm glowing feeling about Typeform is dissolving by the second…

Thank you in advance, as I’m really panicking now...

Hi @Sarah-Jane Thank you!! This is helpful. We don’t currently offer phone/video chat support, but happy to help here!

I created this video below for a different post, but for embedding the form, the steps are essentially the same no matter where you place the embed code:

The downside is each platform is different, so you’ll need to figure out how each platform passes information and the hidden fields you’ll need to add. The easiest way to do this though if you’re pasting the link on multiple sites is to simply add the “source” hidden field and manually type in the source before sharing the link on that particular medium.

For example, if you’re sharing the link on a Facebook post, your URL would look something like this:

www.yoursubdomain.typeform.com/to/ksdhsald?source=Facebook

As for passing information from your email service provider to Typeform, this video below should help:

You can find the list of merge tags from Mailchimp here

Hopefully this helps you get started! Let me know if you get stuck at any point. :) Once you do it once, it gets easier after to setup again, thankfully!

@Sarah-Jane - don’t panic…

you need one survey.

if you post a link to the survey on linkedin, you will want to have that particular button/link send the utm_source=linkedin bit as a hidden field on your inbound url

ditto for facebook

etc.

in your typeform, you want to make sure that you have hidden fields set up for the utm_source etc so that you can capture the value that is coming in (linkedin, fb. etc..) so that on any given survey response you have not only the fields of your survey but any hidden fields, variables that were passed to the form.

you don’t need to track utm unless you want to know from where your respondents come. if this is too complicated, you could ask a question in the survey “How did you hear about us? fb, linkedin, etc…

des

Hi @Sarah-Jane hope you’re holding up over there! Are you embedding on a website builder? Or do you have your own custom site? Let me know which one, and I can try to create a video to walk you through this, too. :)

Thanks Liz, I will be giving the link to someone who hosts our partner's website (to embed this on a page). I just need to know how to add hidden fields, where, and to which page, and what utm category to choose (presumably “source”?) and then, what to type for:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Mailchimp
  • LinkedIn
  • email from a particular email address (if possible), as someone at the district council has a big local list and will forward our link to them via their own email distribution list
  • our website
  • our partner’s website

Please don’t go to too much trouble, we could Facetime or Zoom it if that suits you… :D

Hi @Sarah-Jane Editing my original post because I reread yours and realize I totally read incorrectly. Glad this helped! Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with. :grinning:

Hi @Liz

I have the same situation. But on the typeform platform I use, I don't have the UTM tracking option that appears in the video. Can you tell me how that option is enabled or how the solution can be performed in a way that does not require it?

Hi @AndreaA thanks for stopping by! You can add the UTM parameters manually in the older builder by adding them as hidden fields. Let me know if you have any troubles adding them!

Hi @Liz

How you can I get the UTM option enabled on the platform? I mean how can a I get the new version - the one that you show on the video?

Hi @AndreaA If you don’t have the new builder in your account already, we’re working on adding them to all accounts! In the meantime, you can manually add them as hidden fields in the form
